            MARCHANT FAMILY TREE

Derek Marchant - I was born on 9th November 1948 in Bristol and have lived in the city all of my life. During the early 1990's I decided to undertake some basic genealogical research of our family, primarily on behalf of my elderly parents, but once I had started this, I had caught the bug to question at length the family and to visit the various record offices to explore our historical background further. There just existed too many questions unanswered about our ancestry, also as far as I could find out nobody had ever recorded even our grandparents history, their war records or indeed had ever questioned my parents generation or recorded their findings.
Alas, I found that I had left all this rather late in the day as many of the Aunts and uncles (as well as grandparents) had already deceased, so the task was made much more difficult than if it had been started even just a few years earlier, consequently I am certain that many valuable recollections plus irreplaceable photos have been lost for ever.
I would now urge any who are considering undertaking a similar investigation of their own family tree, to start it as soon as possible !

George Frederick Marchant (Jim) b.13/05/1911 - d.29/11/2000 His autobiography written c.1995

8th Army NR.222403 Nr. 3 Specialist Training Coy. 4 Training Bn Drivers RASC Pernham Down. (Desert Rats)

I was born on May 13th 1911 in 34 Beech Road Horfield Bristol and was the first born child of Fred and Edith Marchant. Fred at the time of his marriage was aged 20 and worked as a Coachman to a Doctor in Redland and Edith was a Domestic Servant in Clifton where she was happy and well thought of. She was 5 years older than my father.
Shortly after their wedding they moved to *(1) Ashley Down Road where father went to work in Gloucester Road driving a delivery horse drawn van for a grocer. Having a large garden at this new address he began keeping a few pigs, whereby making extra income which enabled him to buy a coal and removal business in nearby Thornleigh Road where at about this time my brother Charles was born. The business flourished and father employed several men until shortly after the start of the Great War he had to go into the Army leaving mother to cope with the business. By this time my brother Alec had been born, so to be able to cope mother had to get help from a very nice neighbor's daughter who had just left school. However we all lived quite well compared with lots of others at the time. As I grew up I was interested in things mechanical, also 'wireless' which came in after the war. I had a small shed of my own where I and my friends 'worked' after school making all kinds of gadgets and dabbling (dangerously) in mixing chemicals to make fireworks (without much success, fortunately).
By this time the war was over and Fred returned from France in 1919 to find that trade was poor and that he was hard put to make a living. This went on for about 4 years until finally he could no longer cope and had to file his petition in bankruptcy. This meant in those days that all the home, furniture etc, was sold by auction and we were all evicted from our house. Luckily we were quickly given a new council house that was being built on a new estate at Horfield, beyond the Barracks. All this time I was a pupil at Bishop Road school together with my 2 brothers and at the time of our eviction was just 14 years old and about to leave school. Jobs were not plentiful then as now, but I was able to get work as a *(2) delivery boy for a large bakery. We worked the town in the morning and went into the country around Stoke Gifford in the afternoons. After being there six moths I went into the *(3) confectionery bake house to 'learn the trade' where I stayed until I was 20. I wasn't too keen on the work as we had no fixed hours and the Boss's son , a man of about 40 or so was a misery who cursed us all day off and on. he was a heavy drinker (of whiskey) and very quick tempered. Anyway I wasn't too upset when the business failed and we were all made redundant, as they call it today, even if it meant being out of work at a bad period of time.
However within a few weeks I obtained work as a confectioner at Weston, although this meant going into lodgings there, but I came home at weekends. The bus fare in those days was quite cheap, only 15d return. At the end of the summer the job ended, but I was able to find temporary work at home ranging from 3-5 weeks at a time, until I got work in Wells, *(4) a shop opposite the Cathedral. However again this was only seasonal and I had to look again for work at home. Then I began to get interested in motorbikes and had a succession of old ones, which could be bought and run very cheaply in those days. My friends and I would be constantly riding around , no doubt being a noisy nuisance to neighbours. Jobs were still very scarce. I finally went working with my father, who by this time had thrown in his lot with a local furniture remover and eventually I became a van driver there.
When I was about 23 I met Joan, my wife and three years later we were married and took a (5) flat in Ashley Down, afterwards moving to Queens Road nearby in another flat, where *(6) Janet was born in 1938. Just after this event I was involved in an *(7) accident with a van (? Jim's van and a colliding sports car) and was in hospital for several weeks. It was 1939 and the war had begun, but things went on pretty well the same until Dunkirk in June 1940 when there was a quick call up of men for the Forces. I took my medical and was called up at the end of September that year, the day after a bad raid on Filton, which was very worrying. However I went to Buller Barracks at Bulford, where there was a lot of Bull ! and after six weeks training I became a driver in the R.A.S.C.
Soon we were sent to Surrey in a holding battalion and just after Christmas were taken to Gourock in Scotland and put aboard a ship for overseas, all very hush-hush as things were in those days. This craft was a Union Castle liner of 22,000 tons and a speed of 23 knots, but kept much closer to the convoy speed. I was fortunate to be on 'B' deck, which had 4 bunk cabins and a swimming pool, not to mention 2 shops where we could spend our pay of 10/- per week. There were also baths, but using sea water, so we had to use special soap to get a lather. It was an eight week voyage as we had to make long detours to avoid German submarine; in fact we started by going north to Greenland then westwards towards Canada and USA, then across the South Atlantic to Sierra Leone, where we stayed for a week to re-fuel, but were not allowed ashore for health reasons. It was called 'the White Man's Grave' but natives rowed out to us and dived for coins and traded fruit which we hauled up on long ropes.
During the voyage we had no military duties, but did a few hours in the cookhouse etc. or else up on deck to watch for submarines. The convoy was spread over many miles and Destroyers of the Royal Navy sweeping around us. On the whole it was a very pleasant voyage; one could sit on deck and read or play cards; swim in the pool, (Jim could never swim or float even in the notorious salty Black Sea where nobody sinks, Jim sank, much to the amusement of his other army colleagues !) or watch the flying fishes and porpoises in the Southern Atlantic. Once we saw a school of whales spouting in the distance, but thought at first they were subs ! I think most of us felt guilty having such a holiday when the people at home were going short of food and being bombed ! It was a worrying thought and we got no letters for many weeks, when they all arrived at once.
After six weeks at sea we docked for a week at Capetown South Africa and were allowed ashore each day. Many cars would call and pick us up and take us to the peoples homes and show us all the sights and we went up Table Mountain on the cable cars. Passer by would buy us beer and give us boxes of cigarettes. Finally we went up through the Red Sea, a very hot trip and we were glad to dock at Port Tewfik in Egypt, where we were put ashore crowded in tenders. The men all baa-ed like sheep as they went ashore, as we looked like a lot of sheep. After a long hot train journey we arrived at a massive camp with hundreds of large tents at a place called Geniefa where we stayed several weeks doing drill and getting acclimatized; we had to wear topees at this time, but afterwards handed them in. In May I was with others, put into a unit, 180 GT Transport Con, and were sent 'up the blue' as they called the desert towards the front. Here we established camp, digging ourselves in near the sea just east of Mersa Matrouh, a small town on the coast. I was given a 3 ton truck and sent to Cairo, 240 miles away to ferry equipment from the Delta to RE. Engineers who were making a water pipe line several hundred miles long.
Once I had passed our camp, coming up, I had to go 60 miles across the desert, finding my way by compass. This trip took almost a week and once I broke down and was almost out of food and water before I managed to repair the engine. After a couple of months of this work, four of us were sent out into the desert to a place called Fort Solafi to establish a small supplies dump for the long range desert group. We were sometimes attacked and bombed by the Germans and Italians and were always ready to burn our supplies if attacked on the ground, as we only had our rifles and one truck.
As time went on we advanced to the frontier wire at Hell-fire Pass (Halfaya Pass) ? and up into Libya at Capuzzo. From there a few of us had to go on detachment up near the front at Tobruk and south to the Free-French at Bir Achim. We were with a few R E's and supplied them with a truck. When the Germans attacked us I had to take 30 (sic.) Negro's back, but on the way we were shot and captured. We were in the middle of the fighting all day, but at night the Germans retreated. Two of us pretended to be dead and walked 5 miles towards Tobruk. Later we got back to camp and had a weeks leave. About this time I was made a Lance Corporal and later a full Corporal, which meant I had 5 trucks and 10 men, plus a Lance Corporal to assist me.
We had to go long distances in convoy with ammunition, food and petrol up to the front and sometimes were attacked by aeroplanes which would swoop on us firing machine guns and cannon. If we saw them we would leap out of the motors before it stopped and run away and lie flat on the ground. A few times we would have to go right up the line and supply shells and bullets as they were firing them. That was a bit scary if you thought about it. Sometimes as the fighting continued we would advance hundreds of miles, and then perhaps retreat the same until 1942 we retreated right back to El Alamein not far from Alexandria. Months afterwards we attacked from there and then we kept moving camp daily until we drove the Germans out of Africa 6 months later. Early in 1943 I went to Malta to prepare for the invasion of Sicily which we did in flat bottomed boats. We followed into Italy in September and still with the 8th Army covered the Adriatic front until we were sent over to the American 5th Army in Naples. We were in Anzio, then Rome and soon after I went down with Malaria. At the end of the war we were in Florence and three months later sailed to Marseilles and went up through France into Belgium and Holland. After we got into Germany I was given 7 day leave to England, after 4 1/2 years abroad. Returning to Bergedorf near Hamburg, a week later the war in Europe came to an end and in August I came to England for 6 weeks leave before being demobbed in January 1946.
Janet was by now 7 years old and in 1947 *(8) Bob came along, then *(9) Derek later in 1948, so we had to think about a larger place to live. We had our names on a Council list for a house and in 1950 ? went to live in Lawrence Weston, a new suburb. We all hated it there, so managed to swap to Lockleaze which was as bad, so eventually swapped yet again to where we now live, 1 Hazel Grove, in 1950.
I continued working on removals and we used to go off or caravan holidays, usually Weymouth with Janet, Bob and Derek, until Janet was married in 1961. Some months before Gran had died leaving Grampy still living at NR 2 opposite us. John and Janet lived with him for a time and when he died a year later bought a new house at Frampton Cottrell. Later Derek left school and I went to work at Fishponds, Mr Pegler having given up business. A few years later Bob went to Swansea University, Derek was already working as a Draughtsman in Eastville.
I worked for this company (Sweets Removals) until I retired in 1976 and have since done some part-time driving work at times, but find enough to do here at home in the garden, shopping etc. having got longer in the tooth, until the arrival of the Grim Reaper.

Bob, after attending Fairfield Grammar School, worked in a managerial role for a short while at Mardons Ltd Bristol, a post he never really enjoyed and decided he was definitely not suited to. Following this Bob applied to Swansea University to study as an undergraduate where he undertook a BA in English and Philosophy. He then took his MA in English while working as a Co Editor of 'The Human World' a quarterly review magazine of English Letters. Having returned to Bristol for a period of several years, Bob decided in 1975 to undertake his PHD in English at Canberra Univ, Australia. and later was married in 1982 to Adrienne Nee Steadson, Bob took Australian citizenship and worked for the Dept of Military Pensions and later The Dept of Commonwealth Superannuation. Bob and Adrienne separated after a few years of marriage.
Sadly my brother Bob died in Canberra after a brief illness on 10th November 2006, Adrienne having pre-deceased him in 1988.

MARCHANT FAMILY BACKGROUND
Our branch of the Marchant family originated in the 18th c. from North Petherton Somerset, a village just south of Bridgwater on the A38. It is suggested that the earlier ancestors could have been Huguenots (ie. of French origin) however this has not yet been researched further. Most of the family seemed to have been employed initially as Agricultural workers or Farm Labourers however during the early 20th C. many had moved away to the larger towns of Bridgwater and to the City of Bristol where we also still live. One Marchant family member is recorded at Somerset records office, as living in a substantial house in Bridgwater near to the Castle gate (at Northgate without) and another was the Mayor of Bridgwater.

Fred Marchant b. 7/02/1889 - 26/02/1962 Life of my father - written by George Marchant c.1995. Derek Marchants father.

Fred was born February 7th 1889, the son of Elizabeth and Fred Marchant*(1) a Stone Mason of North Petherton, a village on the A38 road between Bridgwater and Taunton Somerset. Whilst a baby, Fred named after his father, went to live with uncles in a *(2) nearby village, as his father had been killed, struck by lightening whilst at work and his mother had to work in service as a cook, a job in which she was quite skilled. The uncles were quite harsh and he was brought up very strictly and made to work in his spare time after school, scaring birds in the fields and pea and potato picking in their season. However when he left school at about 1 years of age, he went with his mother to live in Bristol where his mother started a small *(3) Cafe business in Eastville and he worked in the shop and later on the trams as a conductor. After a while he worked as a Butcher Delivery, with a small pony and trap around Clifton. This was hard work with long hours and he had to live over the shop, with the other lads, so they could be called early about 5 am usually. He next drove a pony and trap for a doctor in Redland, in which his calls were made, but eventually worked for a *(4) Grocer in Gloucester Road, where he was happier and stayed for several years.
About this time (5) Fred met and married my mother who then lived and worked in Clifton. The wedding took place in February 1910 when he was *(6) 21 and she was 23 and they went to live in *(7) Bishopston and then lived variously in Ashley Down and Beech Road. About 1913 or 14 they went to live in Thornleigh Road Horfield to a Coal and Removal business they took over and he gave up his work in Gloucester Road. They had several vehicles and *(8) 3 horses and stabling there, and the business was successful. Here my two younger brothers were born, in 1913 and 1916; I had been born previously in 1911. However with the Great War in progress, father had to join up and had to leave mother to run the business with the help of several young men under military age; a job she did very well.
Father went to France with the Royal Worcester Regiment later transferring to the Royal Berkshires and became a Medical Orderly. At the end of the war he returned to the business but after a few years there was a slump, work became scarce and debts piled up and he was finally made bankrupt and had to leave the house and the business was sold up, after 10 years of hard work.
Having got work with a Remover he was given a council house in Horfield where he spent the rest of his days. He retired in sic. 1964 ? (?1954) and had nearly 10 years of retirement before his death in 1962.

WAR SERVICE
Fred was called up on 31/5/1916 to the Royal Berkshire Regt. in Reading where he was allocated his regimental number 24590. He was posted to the 11th Royal Berkshires 3/6/1916. The 11th Battalion went to France 24/7/1916 and were based at Frechencourt near Le Havre. They were incorporated into the Labour Corps 30/5/1917 and his new number was 199590. There is no record of his service in the Worcestershire Regiment. However after the war was over many men from the Labour Corps were transfered back to the infantry, often to their original Regt. and it could well have been he spent a short time with the Worcesters before being demobbed. However after leaving the Royal Berks we have no record of him.

L to Rt Rear Fred Marchant Bert and  Aunty Annie nee Dyer Gardiner. Front Edith nee Dyer Marchant holding baby George Marchant (my father) Elizabeth Jane Marchant (Fred's mother). My unmarried great grandmother Elizabeth Jane Marchant born 1867 at North Petherton (daughter to James and Rebecca nee Masey had 7 brothers and 3 sisters inc.

Emelia nee Marchant Foster, Aunt Em. pictured with Douglas Marchant). North Petherton the Foster family once lived in the Bakery shop at North Petherton

Following the birth of my grandfather Fred Marchant born 1889 at North Petherton, Elizabeth left her family to come to Bristol to open a small cafe at 229 Stapleton Road Bristol. There exists no written record regarding Fred's father's name, however the family were always told that he was also another Fred Marchant, a stone mason who had been killed by lightening while repairing a church tower. This Fred Marchant (senior) is recorded as the father on Fred (jnrs) wedding certificate, however Elizabeth Jane Marchant is recorded as an unmarried mother on Fred (jnrs) birth Cert. with father unknown.  Possibly Fred (snr) happens to be a cousin bearing the same surname, never having got round to marrying Elizabeth. It is therefore quite likely that the parentage may be incestuous. More likely Elizabeth's half brother Fred Macey (who later changed his name to Marchant could be the father. He was the son of Rebecca nee Masey by her first partner but later lived with the Marchant family when she had married.) Bridgwater and the surrounding rural region is still today renown by Social Services as having a high level of incestuous relationships also during the late 19th and early 20th century. Fred as a young child, was later sent to stay with Uncles until the age of about 14, at the nearby Somerset village of Othery while his mother Elizabeth had moved to Bristol. He was kept employed working in farm fields scaring birds from the crops with stones and during this period as a very young child, he was stolen by gypsies, fortunately being quickly tracked down and recovered by the uncles. Later Fred joined his mother Elizabeth in Bristol, working at first on the trams, he then moved on to live above a butchers shop at Blackboy Hill Clifton, where he was employed as a coachman. It was here that Fred met my grandmother Edith Dyer who originally came from the little village of Lydford in Somerset. Edith was born in 1885 and her family later moved on to the nearby village of Babcary where most of her other relations had lived for many generations. At the time of their meeting Edith was working in Service at 40 Wellington Park off Blackboy Hill Clifton. Fred and Edith were married at St Johns church Clifton in 1910.
Elizabeth Jane, Fred's mother, died 1913 and is buried (in a paupers plot) at Greenbank Cemetry Bristol.

After their marriage Fred and Edith moved to 2 Falmouth road Ashley Down where Fred worked as a delivery rounds man for a nearby bakery in Gloucester Road Horfield.

About 1911 the family moved to 32 Beech Road Bishopston where my father George Frederick Marchant was born. (an account of Georges life can be read on www.bbc.co.uk/peopleswar/ site). Fred eventually purchased his own horse drawn cart, opening a small coal and removal business just prior to the first world war and then moved to -

- 14 Thornleigh Road Bishopston. This house had a useful gated front entrance leading into a large yard at the rear where his horses were stabled.

On one occasion Fred walked all the way from Bristol to Gloucester in order to purchase a horse from the livestock market, riding it bareback overnight back to Bristol, a distance home of some 35 miles. Next day the poor unfortunate animal died from exhaustion and Fred had to purchase another replacement ! The removal/coal business thrived until Fred was called up for the Army in 1916 during ww1 to serve in Frenchencourt near Le Havre on the Somme France. He became a Corporal Medical Orderly joining first the Royal Berkshires Regiment and then joined the Labour Corps later transferring to the Worcester Regiment.

After Fred was eventually demobbed from the army and despite Edith working physically very hard to keep the business afloat throughout all the war years, trade became so poor that Fred had to file for bankruptcy. Assets and furniture were seized and the family evicted to live 9 Ashley Down Road Bishopston. Fred then worked with Peglers Removals another local business in Bishopston, that had purchased some of the assets from his own failed business, until he had to retire early through ill health in about 1950. Eventually Fred applied for a house on one of the nearby new Council estates where he and Edith lived happily at 2 Hazel Grove Horfield until their deaths in 1962 and 1961 respectively. Fred and Edith ashes were interred at plots 9 and 2 respectively, Canford Cemetery Bristol. (First plot adjacent to the Canford Lane gatehouse offices)
Fred, my grandfather, whilst adopting  a Churchill like stout stature, also unintentionally also possessed at times, a rather frightening over stern Victorian authoritative  air towards us grandchildren. It is really only during recent years since that I have even begun to appreciate the most demanding and difficult lives both our Grandparents must have physically led, from that of hard intensive work, with all the worry of lack of paid regular employment, to the cruel experience of serving on the front line during the first world war. Little wonder their generation at times came across in such a stern manner, however beneath this, at times rather brusque exterior existed also the most kindest great sense of humour.
I can well recall, as a gullible 5 year old lad being sent by him to a local ironmongers, after he spotted me polishing my bicycle, to purchase 'elbow grease' ! The shopkeeper, while still retaining a dead pan face, matter of factly inquired, "for Fred Marchant is it ? Just you go and tell Fred that we are completely out of stock and still awaiting delivery of the left handed knurling irons that he sent your Grandmother in for last week" !
Fred also particularly enjoyed relating another of his notable yarns to the family of how, many years previous, he was on a house removal job employing a young lad as his helper. As they approached Bridgwater bay the boy inquired "Cor Mr Marchant, what's that over there" looking towards the river Parret docks infrastructure, Fred replied "Them be the Dunball treacle mines." My grandfather had to conceal his wicked laughter by looking away out of the van window. The poor gullible lad was clearly quite overwhelmed!
While later undertaking some research at the Bristol Central library about Old Bridgwater I came across an early edition book referring to the Treacle mines of Dunball. ('Treacle' was actually a widely used local term referring to slimy sticky mud laying just below the sub-surface of farm land around Bridgwater bay. This had to be continuously pumped away to keep the land manageable.)
We shall probably never ever know if Fred was actually aware of this, or if the joke had backfired, having originally been played upon him when he once lived in the region.
Perhaps the last laugh was really on Fred !

Edith nee Dyer Marchant b. 26/08/1885 - d. 16/03/1961 Life of my mother written by George Marchant c.1995
Mother was born in West Lydford and her father was a Farm Bailiff who later lived in *(1) Babcary village, nearby.  He was involved in sheep farming and often took large flocks to market in Bristol travelling by foot and taking several days. Unfortunately he took to drink to such an extent that he became blind and had to go and live in a small cottage in *(2) Babcary. Before this happened my mother had gone to Bristol and worked in Service in Clifton, where she met and *(3) married my father. She had a hard and worrying life and when she was in her seventies her health failed and she died in 1961, just a year before my father, at the age of 76.

? Rosa Dyer (my Gt grandmother) w. to Samuel Dyer with baby grandson (my father George Frederick Marchant)? Babcary ?

My grandmother Edith nee Dyer Marchant's father was Samuel, a Farm Bailiff who came from Lydford. He later lived in the nearby village of Babcary. Christopher and other members of the Dyer family on Babcary school records (available from Somerset Record Office.)

Cottage 1) the end cottage adjacent to a Ford pic. on North Street Babcary. Cottage 2) Rose Cottage. L/H end of the terrace of small cottages facing Babcary church.

Samuel was also involved in sheep farming and often took large flocks to market in Bristol droving on foot, a journey that lasted several days. Unfortunately Samuel while later working as a Gamekeeper took to drink and became blind while living at cottage 2. He was looked after by Rosa for many years. My grandmother Edith had already left home to live, work and marry in Bristol.
Rosa and Samuel are buried together in Babcary churchyard their headstone located to the North side of the church facing the little cottage they had occupied in the village for so many years. Two family graves of the Collins family (Rosa's ancestral family) can also be found, just across the path to the Church door entrance on its South side beneath the trees. The majority of the Dyers (and Rosa's Collins family) worked on farms at Babcary / Lydford / Charlton Adam and Charlton Mackrell for many generations and it was said some had never ever left the villages during their entire lifetimes.

Sidney Dyer (Samuel Dyers brother) lived at Cedar Lodge a large house in Charlton Adam and used to ride with the hunt. Sidney is believed to have become an alcoholic and to have drank away the family fortune eventually losing this substantial property. Henry Dyer was also master of the hounds and hunted frequently around the villages.

Notes from 'The Charltons Historical Society 2010 for National Trust research project on the Lytes Cary Estate.

"The 1911 Lease (dated 20th February) of the majority of The Lytes Cary estate fields which had been purchased by Sir Walter Jenner in 1907 names Arthur Clinton Dyer, then aged 22, with his father Sidney (a cattle dealer of Babcary living at Cedar Lodge in Charlton Adam) acting as surety. This Lease excludes the manor house garden and surrounding orchards; the top third of Ravensnest field (now Woodland); Inner New Close (possibly Jenners horse addock); and two of the three cottages at the end of the drive (possibly occupied by staff or still by Cooks Cary tenants, although all had been purchased by Jenner). With the exception of the gardens and an orchard, all fields are then described as pasture. This may be an error or, particularly as it is not known how soon the Porters left the farm after the sale of the estate in 1907, it may suggest agricultural neglect for a few years.
Arthur Dyers lease was retrospectively transferred on 10th September 1918 to his younger brother Reginald Frank Dyer (as of 5th March 1918). Arthur's brother Sydney Herbert Dyer had been killed in action in France on 2nd September 1918 and Arthur himself died in 1925 aged just 37. Its not known how or if any of these events are linked. Grove Meadow and Orchard were removed from Tenancy in 1924 and replaced with 3 Easter fields and the rent adjusted. The tenancy was transferred again on 9th December 1928 to four other members of the Dyer family (Daisy Henrietta Dyer, Christopher Frederick Dyer and Edward Dyer all of the Cedars, Charlton Adam and Percy Robert Dyer of Percy Villa, Babcary. "

Another son of Samuel Dyer was Harry Dyer (Edith's Brother). Pictured bringing the harvest back to the farm with Elizabeth nee Cary Dyer, wife of Farmer Cyril.

Harry's son Cyril farmed crops at Tout Farm Charlton Mackrell / Adam. Cyril also kept a medium size dairy herd (approx. 70 cows), he also ran a small milk horse drawn delivery round in the village C.1930.

Cyril produced cider (scrumpy) made from apples at his Tout farm's small orchard and kept a massive vertical tapped barrel with tankards in the unlocked outbuilding adjacent to the farm road nearby Tout farm gateway, for any passerby to help themselves to free refreshment. Cyril always worked very hard from dawn to dusk. It is said he would usually be found at the end of each working day leant against the farm gate, sound asleep, still standing up ! He would often be heard to remark "What more could you possibly want in life than all this."

Pic. Cyril Dyer shearing sheep at Tout Farm. 'Old Walt' (Walter Croom) looking on, wearing the infamous cap and with his glass eye. Walt was husband to Mary Dyer and lived in Charlton Adam village, Mary was the sister of Cyril and Edith, and Walt was employed as a farm hand. Walt and most of the others spoke in a very broad yokel tongue that could barely be understood by those not born and bred in deep Somerset. Walt was also renown in the villages for regularly selling his (authentic) 'Ye Olde' farm caps to gullible American tourist visitors at his local pub in the village, for the price of a round of drinks. He would then go out to purchase more replacements from the various village jumble sales at market days !

Tout farm house was located adjacent to a tiny very old disused quarry that had been in the family for many generations until Cyril's eventual death in 1983. There was also a large well located near the driveway which is said to have never run dry even in the severest of droughts.
The upstairs of the house was reached via a tiny winding paneled staircase located behind a cupboard door. This very picturesque original farmhouse, mysteriously and most conveniently, later burnt down immediately following Cyril Dyers death, when the farm had been sold on and planning consent for enlargements to the building had been turned down. The whole site was then redeveloped to a much larger modern style house, completely out of character with the rural surroundings, built by its new current owner. This was set further back up the access lane. The original small adjacent village quarry had become disused during 1930's but it now has been very considerably enlarged and is once again operational on a much busier larger industrial scale and has become somewhat of an eyesore to the village.

Pic. Art Wilcox left and Francis Charles Ivor (Uncle Charlie) Marchant right shooting rabbits at the disused old small Tout quarry site. Uncle Charlie (Fred and Edith nee Dyer Marchant's son) who eventually was on the Board of Directors for Rolls Royce Engines Filton Bristol, having worked also at one time with Sir Frank Whittle (the inventor of the jet engine). Francis Charles purchased the large (60 acre) farm field about 1975, on the opposite side of road to Tout farm, stretching down to the main A37 road. This was then re-let to Cyril Dyer at an original 'peppercorn' rent to enable his farm to keep going.

Sidney and Robin Dyer (other sons of Harry Dyer) were the last family members living in the area at Bush Farm just off the A37. They had occupied the family farm until their death in early 2000, thus finally severing generations of links to the region by the Dyer family.

Collins Family originated from Lydford and Babcary villages Somerset. My great grandmother Rosa nee Collins Dyer lived in East Lydford (1911 census) later moving to nearby Babcary where many of the family later lived working primarily as labourers on the surrounding farms.
There are two large multiple Gravestones in Babcary churchyard just opposite the main entrance to the church bearing several of the above family tree names. These during recent years have deteriorated but the lettering can still just be read plus the dates.

Winifred Joan nee Wiltshire Marchant b. 28/08/1913 - d. 28/06/2002
Blue Maids Orphanage Ashley Hill Ashley Down Bristol - written by George Marchant. Related by Joan Marchant c.1995 describing her own childhood spent in the orphanage.

Blue Maids House was situated at the bottom of Ashley Hill, opposite Old Ashley Hill and adjacent to Ivy Chapel. It was one of the large houses which was situated in that road which was a popular residential area in the 19th century. It is difficult to trace which year it was when it became a girls orphanage, perhaps it housed over-spill from Mullers Orphanage further up the road but there is no record of that. However it was ideal for its purpose in those early days before the system of family 'Houseparents' made homes for parent less children more like home. The house was large, three stories, containing 2 large dormitories and 2 washrooms, sick bay and 3 smaller rooms for staff on the top floors. The hall floor contained a large dining room,  large bathroom, 3 sitting rooms, a committee room, also a large playroom. The basement held the kitchen, scullery, and laundry with 3 outside lavatories and space for coal, also a playing area was next t the house. Behind this at the rear of the house were large gardens for vegetables and fruits, tended by a gardener who with his family lived in a large lodge house in the grounds. Ivy Chapel was owned and used by the residents and was reached at the end of the lawns in the front of the house, which had wide steps with  iron balustrades leading from the hall. The committee room contained many antiques, pictures and a huge chest, also an antique fire grate later removed to Bristol museum when the house was demolished. Before this occurred the Salvation Army used the house for a short period as a Maternity Hospital.

BLUE MAIDS ORPHANAGE

Blue Maids Orphanage situated next to Mother Ivy Church Ashley Hill Bristol where Winifred, Edna and Vera stayed to abt. 1918 following Kate Wiltshire terminal illness from TB and William Edgar returning with WW1 severe wounds to his arm which prevented his ever returning to employment. (he was prev. a Baker confectioner). William and Kates ultimate early deaths were just a few years later in 1921 and 1922 aged only 39 and 41 respectively.
Kate was admitted to Wells Somerset mental hospital about 1917 and eventually succumbed to TB.
William Edgar's body was found Dec. at the base of The Sea Walls Cliffs Clifton Bristol. The subsequent Inquest posted an open verdict as to the circumstances of his death but thought to have taken his own life.

The conditions at the Blue Maids orphanage were deliberately made harsh and all inmates made to wear degrading cloaks and apron uniforms.
The general policy of the orphanage was to send girls out to work, in Service, to well-to-do families of Clifton and Redland as soon as they reached their early teenage years. My mother Winifred just occasionally spoke of the ultra strict regime in the Home. Existing on almost, at times, unedible food and my mother having to smuggle this out in her underclothing lest running the risk of a severe punishment for wasting uneaten food however poor the quality may have been.
Young girls worked extremely hard for the rich large family houses around Bristol, particularly in Clifton, often routinely badly treated, fed only with leftover scraps from the main family table, should anything had be left after the employers had finished their own lavish meals. Girls were consequently at times deprived of even basic nutrition while having to manually work from early morning until late evenings then walk home across the city.

The 1881 Census lists Forest Gordon Wiltshire b.1849, William Edgar's father lived in at 6 Upper Berkley Place Clifton Bristol and family. His wife Louisa nee Graves born 1847. Forest Gordon was employed as a coachman quite possibly for a family at this quite prestigious address (top of Jacobs Wells Road off Clifton Triangle). Their next recorded address was believed to be 3 Gloster St Totterdown.

When William Edgar married my grandmother they lived at 9 Melbourne Road Ashley Down. William instructed his oldest son John (uncle Jack) to ensure that the vegetable garden at this address was kept going while he was called up to serve as a Corporal in the army during ww1. Alas the house was eventually sold on by relatives following my Grandmothers terminal illness, William returned home badly wounded from the front to find the family dissipated into various orphanages at Downend (for the boys) and Ashley Hill Blue Maids (for the girls). It is unknown if William eventually took his own life due to his incapacity to earn a living due to war wounds and the break up of the family following Kate's death (William was eventually found deceased close by to base of the Sea Walls Clifton Avon Gorge 250 ft sheer cliffs).
My grandfather William's brother, Athal Gordon Wiltshire (born 1880), married my grandmother Kate nee Reed's sister, Lily nee Reed (born 1876).

Albertina (Betty) Rossiter's ancestral family is quite a complex tree. There are several second marriages and the family moved about considerably since the early part of the twentieth century.
Betty was born at Hotwells Road Bristol (opposite side of road to Pemboke Place. The original house is now the site of an Esso petrol station). The family then moved to Clifton and then on to St Georges near Weston s Mare.
Bettys father was Edwin William Witheridge born Barton Regis moving in 1900 to 9 Edwin Cresc, Cumberland Road Clifton Bristol, then to St Georges on the outskirts of Weston-s-Mare and later moved to Salisbury where he lived with an unmarried partner until his death.
Edwins profession was a Cobbler, he was married twice. Edwins first wife (Bettys mother) was Alice Ethel nee Caple the daughter of Samuel Caple and Celia nee Williams. Edwin and Alice were eventually divorced.

Alice married again to William Harold Ball (this was also William's 2nd marriage his 1st wife was Agnes Gwendeline Ball had died 1928 at the young age of 29).
William and both his wives now share the same grave at Canford Cemetery Bristol.
William (Harold) and Agnes had 2 children Margaret and Gordon William (Harold) and Alice had 1 adopted child, June.

  1. Hi - I have just traced my family back to Nicholas Witheridge also! Our families fragment in the 1600's after Thomas (1650-1740) - my family came from his sone John, and yours from his other son William!
    My tree is on ancestry.com

  3. Good evening. Just wondering if your past history of William Marchant born 1710 had a brother that came to Quebec Canada as my ancestry tracks to a Nicolas Marchant b. 1754 in Quebec but there is an attachment to William Marchant b. 1710 Do you have any thoughts?

  4. Hi there, I have some information about the Samuel Charles Tucker, a.k.a. Charlie, within your tree. His wife was Olive Mary Tucker. I have quite a few letters and photographs, and was wondering if you might have any idea of how I could track down his grandchildren/descendants? I'd love to share what I have with the family.

    Thanks!
